Do not these have 2 letter equivalents?
ß = ss
ä = ae
ö = oe

In cases where the unicode letter is missing just use the ascii equivalent
ie: König -> Koenig

Going full unicode will allow some things without character equivalents. Like typing in klingon. But, there's a large can of worms I'm not yet willing to open in terms of going full unicode. I'd have to redo fonts, inputs, introduce a proper localization database, and a bunch more.

I've been thought they do, but it doesnt seem to feel quite right when I use them.
For work I am in contact with German suppliers all the time and as the Dutch language also doesnt use a ß we also use the 'ss' equivalents in every say 'system managed' stuff we do, but I always default back to ß whenever I can.
I do not feel forced to use the last 2 in either way, the Dutch language doesnt use them either and I have basicly been thought to use them as they are presented.

As a side note, I can apparently nearly read German.

I studied German briefly. It was far too close to English for me to learn. I can still read it (only just), but I can't speak it.
But in German, yes, you can just use ss, ae and oe.

What type of database are you referring to? One built into the .exe or into another file? I'm sure someone would be willing to help with the trivial items. If it's something I could physically do, I would be willing to take a shot at it.
