Most of the player comments on the game sites aren't has harsh as the 'professional reviewers'. As a matter of fact, some give it a very high rating.

With that in mind, I suspect some game blog site will write something up providing some perspective and insight why the commerical review community finds DNF unfit while some in the game player community are enjoying it.

I'm seeing a lot of game players say stuff similar to , "Yea the graphics are old, the multiplay is laggy . .but who cares, it's the Duke!"

I tend to prefer older games, so I couldn't care less what the graphics are like. I have an unusual need to punch people who complain about graphics in the face. You want graphics, go watch a film.

It's fun. That' really all games are for. It manages that, and it tells a story as well. Gearbox have done a pretty good job tidying up the mess left behind by 3DR, Triptych and Pirhana which, from what I hear, was pretty messy.

Yea, Minecraft is a great example how a game can succeed with 25 year old graphics.

Agreed. Graphics don't make the game. It can be pretty all it wants, but if it's no fun to play, or too easy then it's a failure.

That being said, I have no idea what the draw is to minecraft. Really, I don't.

I don't get it either. Maybe it's because I build stuff all the time in drawing and modeling programs.

But let's not poo-poo high-end graphics too much. Excellent graphics can, and do, raise the immersion factor if the rest of the game is done equally well.

Once I had Crysis graphically tweaked to my system, I had many moments where I was completely absorbed as to being in a jungle island environment.

Not poo-pooing great graphics, but you called it right there and that was my point: great graphics don't mean a thing if the game isn't well done.
IMO Crysis2 was disappointing as it didn't really bring anything new to the franchise. Where in the first one they pushed some limits so that you needed a pretty powerful PC to play it, they took the low road and decided to just make a bunch of money, but not a great game. :)

I have Crysis 2, but have yet to install it. The city environment I've seen in the game-play trailers just don't grab me. I suppose I will get around to it.

I thought DNF was "ok", not great. I hoped it would be better, considering it was in development for 12 years, but it is playable. I agree with the long load times. For what the game offers, I think I've waited 5 minutes for a reload, just from dieing. This is on a Core2Duo with 4 Gigs of ram so it isn't a p4 system. I haven't had that problem lately so I'm thinking a silent patch may have been released.

HERE'S the review that made Jim Redner, an employee of the PR firm responsible for promoting DNF, to get fired for tweeting his anger of the review.

Another arse-covering knee-jerk reaction.
