thinking that one that is all black/dark on the left so that shortcuts on the desktop do no blend in would be good

Wha? You can put icons over the entire bottom and top, or am I not understanding you?

the default is to pile them all starting on the left side

AHHHH, yea, but if you do custom wallpapers do you really do 'default'? Anyway, the thing is very modular, so if you want you can easily black out some of the 'slats'
