yes, people yearn for a rescuer to pull them out of their own self-induced problems. it is far better to practice prevention borne of foresight, but that is merely wishful thinking given what we have to work with...

people - and, by extension, nations - need to shake off this rampant entitled victim mentality and take responsibility for their actions.

Once the 'tipping point' occurs, many may believe it's just a matter of 'pulling the plug'.

As we see now, intelligent networking is already fully engrained into society. In 25 years it will be so pervasive, we will be hard pressed to know what is, and what is not, assimilated into the networked environment.

To give an example of *human ingenuity, if observation is needed outside the reach of existing networks, a solution of quick and simple, manufacture and design is conceived over a period of months.

For an advanced AI, with an IQ in the hundreds of thousands, mere seconds may only be required.

I noticed you left out chemically altering the atmosphere in a way that is likely to terminate life. I guess maybe that was included in "the infinite capacity for people to do the stupidest thing at the worst possible moment"
I would also add reality denying capitalist extremists to the list, they are a far bigger threat than all the others.
The resource thing isn't such a big problem, when its all gone, we just wont be able to use it any more. The 20th/21st century has so far been one big orgy of resource wasting for imaginary profit. The sooner we get smart enough to realise that accumulating imagined value is not what its all about the better.

That's assuming that it can actually stop laughing at how dumb we really are.

So the great American dream is for it all to fall apart in one huge very prolonged gun battle and then start living like native Americans used to? Not the best plan I have heard.

"For Nouriel Roubini, one of the few economists who foresaw the 2008 financial meltdown, the global economy may be about to go from bad to worse. In these commentaries, written exclusively for Project Syndicate, Roubini provides compelling assessments of current and emerging threats to economic recovery and growth worldwide."

My humble prediction of doom has always been late 2014 with the realization of the healthcare mandates kicking into high gear and the never ending piling on of more unfunded liabilities. Along with debt being mind-boggling astronomical, we see the beginning of the cancer of defaults and bankruptcy among larger and larger municipalities popping up. Once California demands a bailout from the Fed in the dozens of billions, that will be the sign the economy as we know it is about to end. When a state is longing on the success of a single company's IPO, you know something is desperately wrong.
