In British elections, anyone who can muster enough cash for a deposit (about £500) can stand for election, there can be any number of candidates or parties, it is up to the electorate who they vote for, not politicians. Your system appears to be rigged to ensure that only the two main party's can actually ever win. Neither of our two main party's won our last election, neither won an overall majority and a coalition of one and the 3rd main party had to be formed to get a majority and form a government.
Seems to be working better than any previous administration I can think of.
You work at a VA dominated by Republicans in Madison andd you WILL overhear blatant corruption on those phones and down those hallways. Hell, those top guys will just take a chunk of a veteran's money and go and waste it on this other crap.

I'll be so happy when I'm out of this country.... *sigh*
You should come over here, our politics is less polar but still familiar enough :P
That's england? I know a few people there. Me and my boyfriend might like it.

I myself have been eyeing up Japan, Sweden, and Mexico.

Heh. I don't understand patriotism, but I don't understand this just the same.

Patriotism is like many other things in life, Its great when its given but a dangerous thing to demand. Such overt conditioning (compulsory singing by children) has been out of style in the UK for decades, I would view it in much the same way as religious indoctrination, it only needs to be done when there are very good reasons why people won't choose it unassisted.

Patriotism is nothing but the belief that your bit of soil is better than the next man's, simply because it is where you were born.

Its more like a group understanding that unity is required to keep it as your land at all. Patriotism is a defence mechanism against those who seek to divide and control. It is also often abused by those who seek to divide and control. Its absence is as dangerous as its misuse.

If I read that correctly the proposal came from the police chief. I feel pretty safe in saying that he is quite accustomed to swearing.

This stinks of a new way to raise revenue for a broke, incompetent government.
But Duphily said, "I don't care what you do in private. It's in public what bothers me."
... I was going to chew her out but then I realized there is absolutely no chance of her knowing about it, so I'll hold my tongue. Unless I ever happen to meet her.

no, merely pointing out the naivete and idealism induced by just the little learning/experience that accompanies youth is all.
