Watched the latest episode....meh.

So far this season really hasn't grown on me. Good opening, but then it sort of teetered off into a batch of filler episodes.

I suppose they sort of brought that upon themselves with the whole "write the opener like it's the finale".

Its fairly clear to me, that we are actually seeing a very well crafted story line, but much like River Song it is mostly being revealed to us in reverse order, so it just looks like a bunch of fillers until everything falls into place.

I'm intrigued by the woman behind the sliding doors.

Indeed.
Although something I loved was going back in episodes and finding hidden stuff you wouldn't recognize unless you finished the season. (Bad Wolf = Ssn.1, Saxon = Ssn.3)
With season 5 the crack was explained in the first episode and showed CONSTANTLY throughout the series.
MAKE IT HIDDEN! NOT AN OBVIOUSLY EXPLAINED EPISODE ENDING!

Agreed. It's too much of an anti-climax. And I'm not sure about it being a well-crafted storyline.... We are seeing crumbs of clues along the way, but so far I doubt any of the 'filler' episode stories will figure into the bigger picture. Mostly it's just small things to remind you that there IS a bigger story arc...like the borg-esque people behind the doors, and the question of Amy's pregnancy.

I will say I thought the Gaiman episode was the best written 'filler' episode so far.

Gaiman?
Is that the Doctor's Wife?

There's just the one so far - Madame something, I think.

Yes, that was the Doctor's Wife episode.

Maybe the original series had it right in that each "season" was composed of a couple of serials. Anywhere between 2 parters to a six episode run. You could have two secondary stories that are a bigger part of a full series story arc.

Technically you saw them twice, but either way it was never explained so I'm going to count that as two appearances. :)

Three times, Green. Once on the locked door in the children's home before Amy got captured, once in the pirate ship as she woke up, and once in the monastery.

Ah, forgot about the pirate ship.

If a Who episode is good I'll watch it twice. Once because it's on, and a second time when it's quieter around the house so I don't miss anything.
Admittedly, I only watched that episode once.

So you're calling it bad?
I thought it was an ok filler. Not like the Beast Below. UGH!

I'm not saying it was necessarily "bad"...but it wasn't great.
I mean, it didn't really hold my interest. It felt more gimmicky than anything else. Like, "we don't have a great story to weave here, so how about... Doctor Who versus pirates! Everyone loves pirates! There's that Johnny Depp movie coming out so we'll ride that wave!"

I'd gladly give up a few episodes a series for a stronger story arc rather than pummel you with one at the beginning of the series and at the end and then just sort of coast about in between.

Yeah, I liked how the series started, but it is just kind of lagging on.
