Putting some serious effort into getting stuff into Earth orbit (and down again) efficiently, would be far more useful in the long run. I find the Idea of "big brother" suicide missions to Mars a bit depressing.

the ancient greeks used vivisection on major criminals (murderers, rapists, etc.), so i'm thinking we could ship some to mars first, just to, you know, see how it goes at first; no sense risking perfectly good astronauts in the beginning.

"Oh goodie, a field trip! When I get back I can tell all of my neighbors how I went to mars and they didn't and they'll be sssooooooooooooo jeallous omg!"

How is that a punishment for anything? It's just a waste of money.

If were not going to send highly trained scientists, then we might as well not bother at all.
Either figure out how to get there, get down, back up and home or wait until we have figured it out. We know there is mostly bog all there except rocks anyway. As I said our first goal should be an efficient way to get stuff off of Earth, once we get that everything else becomes much easier to do. Space shuttle was a good try, but failed to be efficient enough, a different approach is required.

maybe sending them on a six month trip in a tin can into a partial vacuum with nothing to eat but dirt once they/if they get there. beats sending a nice chimp or dog - and you get better data.

Honestly if we send a person, the person just needs to be able to follow directions. Give them the core details so that they can survive in cases of no communication and use the simple fact that every human brain is a quantum computer able to understand the vague hand-waving of instructions we as humans use and have far more articulable bodies than any robot thus yet built.

I don't want to understand, things should just stay the way they are until we actually have affordable homes on mars or something.

Our society talking of going to Mars for a prolonged duration reminds me of the early 1930's visions futurists had of future flight. The separation between then and now was of course around 80 years, but because of the law of accelerating returns, our idea of living on Mars in 25 years is probably just as silly and naive.
