Free AVI to animated GIF file converter.

Post by Col Klink »

This little converter will allow you to make animated GIF avatars from AVI clips. I use it to render my 3D models out of my modeling software. One note I might make is to keep your AVI render size rather small at say 100x70 to keep the file size under a megabyte.

The converted GIF will be quite small at around 100K. I use the uncompressed AVI format for best image quality. The program download size is just under 400K. There's also a version for Windows 7 as well. Anyways, here's the link to download it. Evan's AVI to GIF converter.

Personally I prefer "Anime APNG Maker", but you have to give it each frame as an individual PNG. It can do MPG compression though, granted, only if there is no transparency in the images else you get hall of mirrors.

I just realized that the size limit here is only 24K for animated GIF's. Bummer, is there a way to reduce the GIF size from about 104K to around 24K? I have an ISDF Turret deploy animation and I reduced the frame rate from 30 FPS to 15, but the file size is still to high. My AVI render options include several compression settings like Cinepak.

I'm thinking gifs may fade away as gigabit bandwidth becomes commonplace.

We may see avatars become avi capable someday soon. ;)

If flash can get their act together and stop being so difficult to render properly, then yes.

You can do a lot more with flash than just draw with it. I presume that's why it's only for heavily moderated cases.
