OLD BZ2 I.2,CAN IT STILL BE PLAYED ON LINE?

Post by bearcat »

My father in-law and I reinstalled the old bz2 version 1.2 into our computers ( pentium 2 and pentium 4) so we could play all of the old maps" witch there are hundreds of'. We can not see each other on line. We can see each other on a different install of bz2 with the new updates, although I cant get the FE update to show up after it has been installed on my computer (pentium 4). I have made the FE13.CFG short cut on the end of BZONE, with the space. But first things first are you able to still play BZ2 and FE 1.2 on line anymore?. Thanks from two old timers who think this is the best game ever made. Wade

Yes 1.2 works

Though it doesn't have 1.3's UPNP? UDP? code, something to do with firewalls.

Basically, in BZ1 1.0 - BZ2 1.3 PB5.1, you have to forward ports 17770 - 17772 in your firewall in order for others to see your hosted game.

FE13? That version of FE relies on 1.3 PB6.* to function.

1.2 and earlier dont user "/config cfgname.cfg" shortcuts like the later 1.3 betas do. FE for 1.2 will have its own installer that will also install a shortcut to your desktop. That shortcut will do the (old fashioned) method of launching the FE executable that will rename several of your files to other names such as your febzone.cfg file to bzone.cfg, reverting all those changes when FE closes. Since 1.3 has less things hardcoded then it's not necessary to do that.

In sum, 1.2 and 1.3 mods are not compatible across different versions.

1.2 is not very compatible any more with the latest versions of Windows, nVidia graphics cards, and the like. It's also rather more difficult to host games.

If you want to play a particular map or set of maps, then post their names here. If they're already converted for 1.3, people can point you to downloads of them. There's plenty of maps that are 1.3 ready.

Also, though I don't mess with maps a lot, AFAIK unless a map has special objects, ST/DM Maps from 1.2 should work fine in 1.3

Try checking your Windows fire wall setting to see if bzone is listed in the exceptions list and that it has an X next to any Battlezone related listings on both PC's. I have 1.2 with FE and a few other mods installed and they run on my LAN okay.

For 1.2, the host needs ports forwarded. Most likely 17770 to 17772 both TCP and UDP. Technically you only need one TCP and the other two are UDP, I believe, I just don't remember which is TCP and UDP. It's just easier to set all to both.

1.3 supports both NatNeg and UPnP which reduce the need for forwarding ports. Both try to automate the process for you so you don't have to take this step.

Klink, if 1.3 shows up, it isn't a firewall issue. Both versions would be affected. Installing 1.3 will open up the port for bz2, if you allow it to which will benefit 1.2 unless it is tied to the exe vs ports.
