Re: BZ2 Large Textures Pack, v1.0
After several futile attempts to get dunes3.tga to look like something other than an accident at a sewage plant, after scaling it up to 1024x1024. I have opted for a simple replacement of the texture. A picture of some real rock seamless tiled and de-saturated. (The texture on the cliffs)
This seems to be quite acceptable to me. Any thoughts from those who care?

Re: BZ2 Large Textures Pack, v1.0
Also done "bane" textures. Mire next.
Really hoping someone else is going to have a go too.
My process is roughly like this.
Open original.tga In gimp.
fx foundry, toolbox, step resize to 1024. (usually ends up at 1023x1023, so scale it to 1024)
Depending on texture, add noise hsv or rgb or both.
FX foundry,Texturizer, some of this on all or maybe parts of image...
various other, brightness contrast etc adjustments.
Maybe bump map image with itself, blend effects with layers until joyful.
Select all, shrink selection, invert selection, feather 90% of shrink value, Filters-map-make seamless.
Test tiling (filters map tiling) to see if it looks ok.
Convert to dxt, drop in addon, run BZ2 to see what it really looks like....
If its got the desired fine detail and looks pretty much like it did before, then your doing something right
The darker textures are harder than light ones.

Looks like a texture to me.
This is where my signature picture would normally be. It is not, as you can see.

Re: BZ2 Large Textures Pack, v1.0
Well spotted! The purpose is to change as little as possible, while giving the stock terrain textures some fine detail they would other wise lack. I expect there will be a few more textures that are beyond help.

Nice work two Sheds
I think I have a large Tileset to replace the 'Wasteland' textures on my machine somewhere. (The ones used in HiLo for example). I'll try get those to you soonish unless you've done them already.

Re: BZ2 Large Textures Pack, v1.0
what is the difference between what gsh did with dxtgen upscaling and this?

Re: BZ2 Large Textures Pack, v1.0
I'm using gimp/photoshop to add "fine detail" in an artistic manner, also ensuring seamless tiling is still seamless, and as above with dunes replacing the few that just don't upscale well. The dunes cliffs texture only looked a bit like like rock when it was small, upscaled it just became a lot of black blotches. Some of the textures that are mostly white are quiet easy to do, just add subtle greyish patterns to the big white areas, eg noise for sand or cracks for ice. others are more difficult. I did that weird mire texture (mpibridges) that looks like geometric paving with grass, add fine textures to mud and stone, reduce the big black edges and repaint the green blobs in a way that sort of implies leaves or moss, quite pleased with that one . Trying hard to keep them looking "the same" as well.
Obviously Ill want people to check them out, and give feed back. Its a bit tricky finding them all on the maps to see what they actually look like...Probably dump a pack onto BZscrap or somewhere at some point for "vetting"
And of course I am trying to encourage others to have go at some...because I don't really want to do all of them.
Terrain is much easier than vehicle textures.

Ok This is a taster zip.
It contains terrain textures at 1024x1024 dxtbz2 for
Bane
dune
mars
mire
moon
as listed in the data.pak. All but 1 are the original textures reworked with added detail, so you can see the dust before you bite it.
Unzip it to your battlezone2 directory, it will load to addon/mr2dxtbz2s, play maps that use the texture sets above.
Come back here and say I like/hate your textures Twosheds!
I will probably take an extended tea break before doing any more because I have a sore finger.
Note: These are intended as content for the BZ2 Hi res pack. You may take and use them in your mods etc on the condition that you rename them so as to avoid duplicating assets and causing confusion.

I would like to see the non dxtbz2 files personally.

Yes of course, This is just a taster to see what people think of them/asset vetting, They are best viewed in this context, in bz2. I'm quite pleased with how they look in game. They are mostly very grey, like the originals, when viewed anywhere else.

I like them MrTwosheds. Very subtle changes but I notice less darker "blockiness" with the terrain maps now.
Good work!

Re: BZ2 Large Textures Pack, v1.0
There is still a ton of other stuff to do... sky, sky sprites, props etc. Not mention vehicles and units. I think the sky textures will be most difficult. Not sure what to do there, they are very much part of the overall BZ2 image and need to remain looking like the originals, I don't have any nice Re-cloud-it plugins They could go up to 2048x2048.
