Problems with the keyboard input (Win7)

Post by katana »

Good afternoon!

I'm having some problems with the keyboard input. For example , the Shift key (cancel order), the Spacebar key (send order) and de Escape key (open options menu) aren't binded !

I manage to fix the Shift key and the Spacebar key , but I don't find a way to fix the Escape key (so I can't save my game or pause it)

Please help!

Oh, and excuse me for any gramatical errors, english is not my first language :)

Good bye !

What version of the game are you on?

If it is 1.2, try this: http://www.bzscrap.org/downloads/Utilit ... s92700.exe

Katana-
Try going into Options -> Input and load the default mouse configuration for starters. Additionally, you may want to read the Readme13.rtf file installed to the same directory as BZ2 1.3.x - it notes that some keys (like the ~ or ` key used for some ingame actions) are rudely stolen by some various Microsoft apps. BZ2 is not the only game affected by this; in the readme13.rtf file, I link to how some of those other games have worked around things.

How can i check the version of my game?

Sorry GSH , but that file (Readme13.rtf) is not even in the installation directory.

Katana-
If you are running any 1.3 patch, the version # is shown in the bottom-left corner of the initial "logon" (aka pilot selection) screen. Before 1.3, the version # was not shown. If you're running on Windows 7, the 1.3.6.4 patch is the most compatible with Vista/Win7/8; older patches are less compatible and may exhibit issues.

Hello,

I have managed to install BZ 2 from my original Game CD on windows Vista, patched it to version 1.2 beta and installed FE on top. Good news: FE is finally running, after seemingly countless failed attempts.

Bad news: I got the same problem with keys that are not binded as Katana had before:
My issue:
- my FE version installed seemingly comes with incomplete settings for keys and mouse. Default settings for mouse are incomplete too. I was able to set the most basic stuff myself,
BUT:
- ESC (Escape button) doesn't open the game option menue. I can't assgin the esc button myself in the game menue. In the basic game BZ 2 without patch and mod which i I installed on the same PC, the ESC button is perfectly working (the basic version in which it is working is installed in another program path, I don not know, if this matters or not:_ C:\ programs or program files\battlezone ii). Thus, I don't know why it isn't working in FE.

- Space button isn't working to select a building place or units. Same problem as with ESC button above. In basic BZ 2: no problem.

I tried the hints given by GSH above, i.e.:
- set mouse settings to default : doesn't solve the problem.
- Although I am using the 1.2 patched version, I was reading the readme for 1.3 public beta for the keyboard hints. There, it is said I should find a file called "gameprefs.ini" under addon\config\... : maybe it is because I am using 1.2, but I cannot find such a file, although I have activated "display hidden files" in windows.

Thus, I cannot configure this file in order to get my game options back.

Furthermore, I checked the links to other games posted in this readme file, but I'm afraid they didn't help me either.

Without space and game options, I can't play....

Any advice on this? Thanks in advance!

my technical Data:
BZ 2 original CD
install path C:\games\battlezone ii
patch 1.2 US beta
FE full installer
windows vista

PS: I know that the 1.3 patch is probably causing less problems with vista, but I want to play FE in 1.2. version, as described in an earlier post. The aim code and the improved AI in 1.3 are too hard for me to work through the campaigns. Therefore, patching to 1.3 is no option for me, as long as there is no way to deactivate the improved AI.

If you can get your 1.2 FE to work properly I might ask you to help me compare my mission fixes for 1.3 FE to their 1.2 versions.

Sorry, gameprefs.ini is a 1.3-only item. It was added in development.

In all stock versions of BZ2, after the login screen, there's a main menu with a movie playing in the center, and a button to go to the options pages up top. That's the same as where the ingame escape key will take you. FE was one of the mods notorious for thinking it owned the pregame shell and could replace it all. See if FE still has a link to options before you launch a mission.

@ Nielk: sorry, but I am not quite sure if I understand your request. I am not into the technical stuff. erm... what do you mean to compare mission fixes 1.3 to 1.2?

@ GSH: If I start FE and log in with my Pilot name, there's the start menue with the video in the center. There I got the options button. it is present and I can access options. This is exactly, where I already set my controls (because I had to assign fire and weapon changes myself, etc.). However, in "Options", I see no way to assign buttons to the space and escape function. What do I have to do?

There is no specific general binding for space and escape. But, as mentioned above, go to Options->Input and [re]load the mouse and/or keyboard bindings. That'll reset things to default. See if you can get that working first before customizing things.

I'm working on trying to fix the FE missions, but my conversions are closer to recodes than ports, with timings of things being the worst part to get right. Attack waves could be too fast, too slow, etc.

Resetting your controls to default mouse as GSH is describing is your best bet for fixing most of your control issues.

@ GSH:
Unfortunately, that is what I am trying to say: I already tried fixing my buttons by entering "options" and setting / reloding mouse as "default". This doesnt solve the problem.

Red Spot also recommended these alternative key settings, but I don't know how to install them correctly. Do they have to be installed in the same folder as my game is located?

@ Nielk: okay. Well, I would be happy if the game would run at all. I do not remember how fast enemy waves came in FE 1.2 version, in 1.3 they are really too fast and aggressive , so a fix would be really cool ;)

Try reloading keyboard. If that doesn't work, good luck. 1.2 is well over a decade old now -- closer to a decade and a half. I don't bother spending any time on that build. Why don't you try 1.3 -- there's lots of maps in stock, and there's a whole bunch of other mods converted to 1.3, if you're a person that requires a mod.

Keyboard doesn't work neither, but thank you for the hints. At least I could try. Well, as I said, I tried the 1.3 patch earlier. I have nothing against the upgrade to 1.3 in the first place, but the difficulty level due to the improved enemy AI is simply too hard for me, and this seemingly influenced all mods I tested on 1.3.6.2 so far. Or is there a way to play FE on 1.3 without those difficult AI settings? I just liked the continuing story in FE a lot, which is why I wanted to play it again.
