And the scary part is, there are 8 major canyons on Octoclopsys......

Also, working on a list of major battles right now, hope to post a good chunk of them over the weekend, stay tuned....

Scientifc question: I know how to give Mars an atmosphere, but what about a Magnetic feild? Perhaps redirecting an asteroid to get the planet spinning faster? Input wanted.

You could do it artificially with magnetic control stations gaining their power from some other source be it geothermal, nuclear, or otherwise.

Something that is not addressed too much when terriforming is discussed is scale. Many techniques may work, but mastery of the scale is a wonder in its own right.

When scale is addressed, the proponent of the idea quickly finds even massive industry level involvement takes centuries.

Increasing or decreasing a planet's spin, or altering its trajectory is talking about almost inconceivable amounts of energy. Heart of the Comet is a hard sci-fi about moving Halley's Comet a few degrees and the months of continuous effort it takes accelerating manufactured 20lb "pellets" every few seconds to hundreds of meters per second from numerous sites.

That's why I am thinking an asteroid. A large enough one could, if striking just the right place, could get the planet spinnign again, with incoceivable amounts of energy. However, the amount of debris might cause some problems,a long with the crater. However, the amount of ash might work to warm the planet, so nukes would not be needed.

A high mass impact is the best idea as far I could imagine with any sort of technology in the next 50 years. Since Phobos and Deimos are far too small to serve as tidal generators after terraforming is underway, using them might be an idea. The only problem is the proximity, thus the limited kinetic energy they would offer. Most likely you would need a "biggie" from the inner asteroid belt like Pallas or Vesta. Of course I'm just taking wild-ass guesses :?

By the way, why do you want to change the rotation time?

In order to spin the planet to give it a magnetic feild to protet it against all the nastly little things running around in space.

Also, been busy this weekend, but I will try and get a list of battles, hopefully all those taking place around Ectoclopsys, up by tomorrow.

Mars already spins at, 24hr:39min:35s.
Earth in contrast, is considerably larger and spins a bit faster at, 23hr56m4s.

I could imagine Mars (wild guesstimates considering planet composition, atmosphere, AU, etc,), spinning as fast as the mid teens per rotation before major crust disruption and the differential acceleration dynamics of a molten core from axis to surface causes too much continuous surface fracturing to sustain the kind of life we would want.

But, kicking up the rotation, may be just what Mars needs to "mix it up" in the core to generate a magnetic field.

Which i exactly what i am hoping for.

Now with Europa, because it is caught in the powerful gravity of Jupitor, does it have a liquid core capapble of creating a magnetic feild, or does Jupitor do that for it?

I'm not sure if Europa is a feasible "terraform" planetoid with any kind of technology and infrastructure possible for MANY years. I use quotes because terraforming usually suggests making an 'earth-like' planet. Europa being so small (0.14g) and probably 99.9% ice (water) surface, sustaining an atmospheric pressure close to what humans need, appears impossible. I would imagine, if it were possible, it would require ongoing artificial assistance on a scale that boggles the mind.

One aspect that I have linked to in other posts, is we are approaching what has been coined as the Singularity. The truly remarkable aspect, it is well within the lifetime of most people alive today, and will be a MAJOR part of the lives of younger people (~<40). The worrisome aspect is most people don't see the obvious signs.

Technology, politics, religions and cultures. . . with those four variables interacting, the next 25 years are certainly the most critical years for mankind in the last 5000 years. When AI comes 'online' as truly self-aware and self-replicating/improving, its "intelligence" may snap away from the human capacity to comprehend. It may accelerate away from our comprehension in months, weeks, or even days.

One thing to keep keenly in mind, all the think-tank futurist predictions, all the hard science fiction you read and study, could very well be moot since it all comes from the minds of humans and our limited capacities.

After the 'transition' or Singularity, terraforming could very well be seen as quaint and naive as the Tower of Babel.

Here you are, the major battles of Ectoclopsys. There aren't many, as fighting on the planet is just a warm up really for the war, but some intresting stuff none the less. Feedback wanted on the Battle of Chrybdis, cause I don't know how likely the Treasconi actions are.

June 10th 2049, Battle of the Tarback River: Major John Aldans leads his company, Omega, along with assistance by Captain Hodges of Hotel Company, both from the 3rd fleet, launch an assault on a Treasconi base on the East bank of the Tarback River, a major waterway flowing from the Tali Mountains. Aldans and his company attempt a direct crossing but inevitably fail, being forced back to fresh reinforcements from Golf and Delta companies. During the fall back, Treasconi forces fail to acknowledge the retreat order from the base, and are drawn into the canyon where the reinforcements are dug in. Hodges and his company eventually break through their resistance on the right flank and encircle the Treasconi force, destroying and leaving the base near defenseless, where it is overtaken quickly by the vastly superior force. The result it temporary access to fresh water before it is poisoned by Imperial forces, but also the first truly significant victory of the war, with the loss of the base causing many field forces to withdraw from the area due to a lack of fresh water. Also gives a large area for the 2nd and 3rd fleets to land the bulk of their forces, proving too much for the small forces in the area to overcome.

July 2nd 2049, Battle of Scylla: One of Ectoclopsys’ two moons, the liquid water covered Scylla, as it is later named by the ESEDF, is the sight of the first space battle of the war. Four Treasconi warships jump to its opposite side before emerging to engage the ESEDF fleet to analyze it, with ground battles proving tragic for their side. The battle is no different, with 3 out of the 4 warships being destroyed. However, as the last one flees, the Xia follows it against orders, where it gets caught in an electromagnetic anomaly and crash lands. Both sides move rapidly to obtain control of the ship, with ESEDF forces eventually managing to liberate the besieged cruiser after the crew valiantly fought to keep ground troops out, resulting in the famous chare of Lieutenant David fisher, who led his company of infantry in a charge against Treasconi armor, waving the EF flag proudly. Moments after, ESEDF armor arrives to defeat the encircling Treasconi Company. The Xia’s commander, Captain Wi Fey, is court marshaled for his disobedience and is exiled to a prison on Europa. The Xia is eventually rebuilt at the war’s end.

July 13th 2049, Battle of Mesaky: Through the will of the unrelenting General Wladyslaw, three companies are sent north from the rebuilt Dido base to secure the first Treasconi city. While the city is poorly defended and shows little resistance, its captures mark the capture of a large swath of land containing various rivers. It also allows the ESEDF to land its full 3rd fleet on the planet, while General Cardiff still struggles in obtaining ground to land his own troops.

July 31st 2049, Battle of the Coffee Lakes: The Coffee Lakes receive their name by the large amount of dark sediment they receive from the nearby dust plains, giving them a rich, creamed coffee type appearance. On July 31st, a major Imperial force begins an assault on the ESEDF help series of lakes, intending to drive them out of the area. While the region is claimed by Cardiff, three of Wladyslaw’s companies, led by Major John Aldans, attempt to hold down the area while what forces Cardiff has in the region evacuate. Following an intense artillery bombardment, a unit of Imperial armor moves in to attack the main base. However, shortly before coming into view of the base, the Imperial force is attacked by a squad of rebels, who now make themselves known to the ESEDF at this time, allowing for Aldans to rally his fleeing force into a sallying offensive, driving off the Imperial forces and securing the region once again, though it will continue to come under attack for weeks.

August 16th 2049, Battle of Caerhi airfield: The first major aerial battle of the war. Captain Bernstein, leader of the aero-space fighter brigade onboard the Germanicus, takes the entire brigade, some 300 fighters, on an all out assault against a Treasconi airfield allowing for imperial forces to continually harass ESEDF forces. During the attack, the Imperial forces unveil a secret weapon. This is what is referred to as a Pelican, a large airship capable of carrying 50 fighters at a time and armed to the teeth with a variety of heavy weapons. Several of these emerge from the base during the attack, and an onboard magnetic pulse weapon disable any electronic device that comes within its range temporarily, rendering ESEDF missiles near useless. Eventually, Bernstein manages to ward enough Treasconi fighters to reorganize his squadron’s to concentrate enough power from their plasma guns on the engines of the various pelicans, eventually taking them down and allowing for what remained of the base’s defenses to be overrun by ESEDF ground troops. However, Bernstein loses three squadrons, green, orange, and yellow, during the attack, causing significant casualties to the air brigade of the Germanicus.

August 29th 2049, Battle of Charybdis: The second of Ectoclopsys’ two liquid water moons, the planet would witness the first ever sinking of an ESEDF war ship. During this battle, 5 Treasconi warships jump behind the moon and immediately shut down all systems, rendering their jump almost undetectable. When natural gravitational movement brings them into sight of the ESEDF fleet, they turn on and open fire and on the unprepared warships, mostly the Templar and Saratoga. During the battle the Saratoga would take extensive damage, resulting in the failure of its own engines. The lack of stability causes the gravity of Charybdis to pull the warship down into the oceans of the planet, though all personnel are evacuated in time. While the battleship is lost, the Treasconi strike force is destroyed as well, resulting a very Pyrrhic victory.

November 12th 2049, Battle of Mount Zecha: While Wladyslaw and his force focused more on capturing actual rives and Treasconi bases and cities, Cardiff focused more on securing the countryside, starting with the Tali Mountains. Mount Zecha contained various springs with water and gave access to much of the mountain chain, home to many natural resources. However, effective radar jamming and concealment of troops leads to Cardiff and his army believing that the mountain is relatively undefended. During his march up the mountain with a quarter of his force, Imperial forces ambush his column with two regiments or armor and infantry. However, Cardiff’s cunning and use of his superior weapons allows for him to hold his own against the outstanding onslaught before pushing back and driving the Imperial force into a route. The victory gains him fame at home and in the army, causing envy within Wladyslaw, who is later compelled to seek greater victory.

December 21st 2049, Battle of Maineheli Citadel: Envious of the recent fame gained by Cardiff, Wladyslaw hoped to perform something astounding by making an all out drive towards the Lateli Sea to secure more water and defeat the large Treasconi military presence in the area. The offensive, which began nearly a month earlier, will prove costly, with overall casualties amounting to 8,000. 3,000 of these will come at the battle of the Maineheli citadel, a massive military complex on a peninsula jutting out from the Northern end of the sea. In order to capture the immediate area around the sea entirely, Wladyslaw launches an all out assault on the base. The various landing parties receive bitter resistance from the well entrenched guns and defensive positions around the base. The battle in many ways is reminiscent of the battle of Normandy in 1894, with only a little less bloodshed. After the battle is finished, the base lies in ruins, as does the assault force. However, the victory manages to secure Wladyslaw a solid leg up on Cardiff, and ensures fresh water to the ESEDF army, now landed on the planet entirely.

January 2nd 2050, Battle of the Golden Lakes: Far near the North Pole of the planet lie the golden lakes, which get their name form rich phosphorescence emitted by a high concentration of native bacteria. Taken by the Treasconi back from the ESEDF a month earlier, it served temporarily as a major operating base against Northern ESEDF forces. Following “New Years”, at least back on Earth, general Wladyslaw focuses two companies to take the area back. The assault lasts for the better part of the entire week, with constant changing between areas of control. When the battle is done, the two companies suffer high casualties, but the collection of lakes is secured. Also gives the ESEDF access to the Northern pole, critical in securing the planet.

February 22nd 2050, Major space battle: Since it takes place just in the vastness of space, no specific title can be given to this battle, though it is significant. An entire Treasconi fleet, amassing to 21 ships, jumps to the far side of planet, moves into battle formation, and launches a full on assault on the ESEDF fleet, primarily the 3rd. Heavy aero-space fighter combat highlights the battle, with the Treasconi warships keeping out of range of the various ESEDF cannons, capable of doing severe damage to the various Treasconi ships. Eventually, the ESEDF fleet in its entirety move against the Treasconi fleet, destroying four ships before the fleet can withdraw. However, the Cruiser Maya and Carrier Paris both suffer heavy damage, and are allowed to jump back to Titan’s orbiting repair yard to restore themselves to their previous strength.

March 8th, 2050, Battle of Zedchu: Desperate to make his way to the city of Mae’zuki, the planet’s capital, General Wladyslaw sends 9 companies under the guise of Colonel Hurst to take the region quickly before the various Treasconi field forces can regroup and launch an offensive against his own scattered forces, drawn across the planet in holding down order and keeping military forces at bay. This force, amounting to 7,020 troops, makes a fast march towards the city, in many cases not even bothering to slow itself down by taking various outposts along the way, where Treasconi forces regroup and re-arm themselves. Mur’turnsumn, the commander of the region, uses this to his advantage and slowly has his forces move towards Hurst’s flanks and rear. Unaware of this due to radar jamming, Hurst continues his march towards the city, deep enough in enemy territory that aerial evacuation is impossible. The Treasconi spring their trap on the 8th of March, using heavy tanks to punch holes in Hurst’s column before surrounding and annihilating Hurst’s forces, with only a few managing to escape by retreating early on in battle. The defeat is an extraordinary setback, casualty’s amount to 6,500 and Mur’turnsumn now having a wide swath of ESEDF controlled lands to take back. However, he will be defeated later on by Major John Aldans at Cookha ravine, though the battle will not see the amount of casualties as Zedchu in part to Mur’turnsumn’s forces being spread out over an area of 300 miles.

June 28th-December 24th, 2050, The Siege of the Oculus: the Oculus is a large, sprawling, 220 mile complex of ravines, canyons, rivers, and outposts centered around a large base in its center, an area comprising over 20 of those miles. On June 28th, three companies under General Cardiff arrive nearby after taking several small outposts and proceed to cut off overland trade routes into the base. This unofficially starts the siege, though the full operation will take place 2 months later with a full 85% of the planet under “relative” control. Well positioned defenses, including mines, hidden outposts, and guns burrowed into the canyon walls, makes progress near impossible, with only 12,000 troops available to assault the area. Large amounts of field forces trying to move into the safety of the Oculus also cause problems as ESEDF forces cannot precede with various small groups harassing their flanks. By December, only 75 miles of the Oculus belong to the ESEDF, and rebellions are beginning to occur in Imperial loyalist cities and towns. This results in Operation William Tell, the capturing of a Treasconi dropship and using it to smuggle a Peregrine Bomb into the center base. The plan, executed on Christmas Eve, works perfectly, and the entire complex system of defenses falls within a matter of days following. This is the last major engagement on Ectoclopsys, and marks the loss of the planet to the ESEDF. Following the loss of the oculus, Imperial forces withdraw what they can from the planet and prepare defenses on Octoclopsys for the coming invasion.

Ok, here you go. You've given twelve pieces of the puzzle of 2049 and (I hope) 2050 history ;)

But you're still providing a 'textbook history'. :geek:

It's almost like you're inviting someone to fill in the gaps :!: ... :?: ... ...

If twelve people participated to 'expand' on one of the battles with no story or premise ramifications, mine would be 2/22/49(50?) :o ;)
