Fixed a bug in my plugin

Post by Froo »

The plugin is for an app that is not used here; just felt like sharing the good news (it's good news to me, anyway :) ).
I wrote an OBJ importer/exporter plugin in 2009. Some objects were imported 'inverted'. Turns out I needed to multiply the x-ordinate by -1 on import. I had to do the same on export as well. I may need to make this an option, rather than an always-do type of thing. Anyway. I am just glad I finally had the time to give it a serious look and resolve it.

And BTW; I have a workflow question for you folks. If you make your own ship models, do you typically apply your texture in the final, destination app? Or do you add textures in an intermediate app, and expect the textures to be applied in the destination application, on import? I'm just curious.

In the rare event that I try to model, I texture in the first app, then fix any issues with it that may arise on the way.

For texturing, the only real way to do it is make the model first, and complete it, then texture the entire thing. (In my case, all in 3DS Max, and creating the textures in PS)

Using Sketchup and Indigo, you can choose from several approaches to applying textures. It can be done in Sketchup or Indigo, or a combination.

I would love to have enough free time (and motivation) to learn zBrush. I have it, its just, incredibly unconventional... You can't paint colours directly onto your high-poly model, and the uv-map plugins are the best and easiet i've ever seen. Its simply ridiculous that 3DS doesn't have UV plugins as powerful as it yet...

Some friends of mine also own zBrush. I am impressed with their work.
But what's the price... $699 or something? Holy cow! Man... If I had $699
I'd pay some debt off! Would be great to get some car repairs off my back
but anyway...

there is also Sculptris, which is free, and very similar to zBrush. Some folks
here may not know about it; Sculptris and zBrush have a utility which allows
you to import your sculptris model into zBrush for additional work. I believe
the idea there is, for you to get skilled with Sculptris, then when you are ready,
buy zBrush and use it.
