Banjo's are actually very nice instruments. I have played them before, and, while quite different from a bass, they are instruments to be respected as much as the people who play them.

Tis my point. If you've not got a fantastic ear (or a piano) then its very difficult. Four is much easier. Fortunately, four is more common in Irish folk.

Not to mention the strings aren't tuned to the same intervals as any other western string instrument.
