Request for Information
If anyone sees a game with a Nielk1, VSMIT, GSH, or any number of other names that are clearly not us, please post the IPs here. I have a perfect solution for this but would prefer not to go digging myself for the IP list.
This does however push forward my authentication system time table, but one must do what they must do. The system is in progress and is designed to tell you who it thinks just joined your game by internal IP database. A secondary feature I am working on a user and password based 'I am really in this game' system tied into the same high level authentication layer.

Re: Request for Information
Only issue is they'll have to use your mod launcher for it to even work.

Re: Request for Information
Just live with it, you cannot own a nick.
Re: Request for Information
That is not the point. The point is that we have people going around ruing games, by any name. ATM they simply use some of our names, but they did it before and they will do it after.MrTwosheds wrote:Just live with it, you cannot own a nick.
So, instead of doing nothing like everyone else does, often sitting and bitching about it, I am actually doing something. So either help or bite me. I don't need condescension when I am not one of these other lazy assholes.
I am throwing together a quick program that sees incoming BZ2 connections and writes on your screen from an IP list file.General BlackDragon wrote:Only issue is they'll have to use your mod launcher for it to even work.
Re: Request for Information
How about a questionnaire? What's something that only you would know?
Re: Request for Information
Anyone should know just by how I talk in game that it is me. But I digress. I am taking this opportunity to solve the issue with something useful for all. I have all the info I need for writing on the D3D9 screen, but I still need a good way to get the IPs of those connecting. I could just watch for bz2 'join' packets, but I do not know much about those. I could use the logs but they only write whenever the buffer is full so they would be delayed.

Re: Request for Information
What I am saying is that the 2 or 3 griefers are not really worth the effort of a response.
Doing something mean like releasing the next patch with their ip's already in everyone's ban list really would be an over-reaction to what is actually a very pathetic and juvenile obsession.
And we should not feel the need to respond.

Re: Request for Information
Meh. This was on my list of things to do already, they just accelerated it.
Re: Request for Information
Anybody with half or even quarter a brain would see it as griefing. Then again, I give people a lot of credit.
Re: Request for Information
I can understand the motivation for this tool. I can however not understand why it requires the IPs of those you see as greafers, unless it is for personal reasons.
If you want us to be able to know how joined their games, you just need to ask those willing, to hand you "their own" IP and nickname and set up a library using that information.
If you ever get returned an "unknown" you could assume you might need to take a bit more care turning your back on them. Allowing the tool(or 'datafile') to be edited freely allows people to add their own friends, who might not have been willing to give their IP to you or whoever else set up the library.

Simply it would work for anyone on record. It would say something like:
Probable Identity: Name(s)
Probable Identity: [Unknown]
Probable Identity: [Trusted Anonymous]
It is a small piece of a system I am designing that was to update the IP logs though the use of sign in by user and password into a sub system. This sub system would be able to keep statistics if so wished and also be able to act as an alternative game matching system should gamespy die again.
Yes, I do plan to allow for anonymity for those who earn it.
As we know many people already keep IP lists. This will simply make it so IP checking is much faster and newbies could still do it.
