Battlezone Copy Rights

Post by Killer AK »

i just read that battlezone had it's copy rights bought by a small company from bankrupt atari?
anyone have any thoughts about this?
maybe a battlezone 3 is on the way one day?
i thought there was a lot of copy right holders for this game?
how does that work with activision involved, electronic arts-pandemc, evolve, and atari?

I dont think a BZ3 will be made unless Rebellion (the name of the company that bought the title) really, really wants to make a similar game- or it might just be a hover-tank FPS, without the RTS element.

My knowledge says Activision licensed the "Battlezone" title, from Atari, for only two games. I've seen several sources that contradict each other about BZ1's and BZ2's game content, such as Rebellion now owning the entirety of them. I doubt that. I'm assured EA doesn't care, Evolve is gone, and Atari just sold what they had off.

There was an article written at the time of the sale that explained Rebellion bought the rights to the 1980 arcade game and its clones, not the Activision series. The server that article was on has been shut down and the article was not archived, so I can't fetch it for you know. It's linked on BZWiki's News page.

IIRC it wasn't that it said the BZ we know wasn't included, but that it wasn't listed and we jumped to that conclusion.

i wrote rebellion on facebook and e-mail from thier website asking for any battlezone news and if they owned all the rights to bz1 and bz2.
they yet to reply but if we were able to show some support it might encourage them to release some news.
rebellion is currently advertising sniper elite 3 on facebook. check it out and don't forget to submit a battlezone question ;)

Some game company exec's went on a freebee to an auction, drunk too much and blew some company cash on the title Battlezone. It does not mean that anyone is going to make another game like this.

If anything, they're probably thinking of the 1980's Arcade battlezone, probably some remake of it for the iPhone and mobile apps.

Such a waste...

Ah, I'd never heard of them.

Wow, cool, they republish old games?

that means they might actually do a re-release of BZ1/2. :)

Though I hope they communicate with us, as there's currently in-development patches for both.

i've played a lot of sniper elite v2 and it's very good; here's hoping they will do something with the battlezone series.

Again; sources state Rebellion bought Battlezone (1980), Battlezone 2000 (1995), and nothing more.

Battlezone 1 has a world wide fan base. i knew lot's of israeli's and russians, and new zealanders. One or two guys from the UK so i could see why they were interested in the game. i wonder how much they bought the license for.

Per http://atariuser.com/portal/atari-to-se ... nanswered/ , it says this:
The Battlezone franchise has been sold to UK studio Rebellion Interactive, Star Control has gone to Stardock Systems Inc, and the Total Annihilation and Masters Of Orion franchises going to Wargaming World Limited. Rebellion has bid $566,500 for Battlezone – more than double Atari’s minimum bid.

the best things they could maybe add to it would be some new voiceover actors, scripting, and maybe some shaders, some elevators, space battles, etc.
